There was limited testing at the circuit and qualifying was saterday evening. Brian Heart took Pole position in qualifying by just under 9 tenths from Richard Kearney and Niall O 'Flynn. Chris McCabe qualified 4th followed by Brendan Carr and John Linnane to complete the grid. the 2017 champion David Parks was set to start from the back of the grid due to not being able to qualiy on Saturday evening.

Race one: Race one started sunday morning and as the lights went out it was Richard Kearney who took the early lead followed closely by Brian Hearty and the rest of the pack. Through turn one David Parks climbed up the grid to P3 where he was now challenging Brian Hearty for second, This gave richard kearney the oppertunity to pull away from the pack and extend his lead. Parks managed to pass Hearty in turn one and begin to hunt down Kearney, all while still being under imense pressure from Brian Hearty. Parks Hunted down Kearney and once again passed in turn one. Brian hearty then swooped through to take second followed nose to gearbox by richard keareny. The final order in race one was

1. David Parks

2. Brian Hearty

3. Richard Kearney

4. Niall O' Flynn

5. James Sunderland

Unfortunately due to Mechanical gremlins Chris McCabe and John Linnane didn't get to finish the race. Unfortunely Brendan Carr didnt get to start the race due to a personal injury.

Race two: Race two began sunday evening in a sunny bishopscourt racing circuit. It was David Parks who took the early lead followed closely by Brian Hearty and Richard Kearney, who were both equally as hungry for the win. Brian Hearty then passed David Parks and took the lead followed by Parks and Kearney. Chris McCabe and John Linnane had a very close battle also until Chris managed to pass John and put in some blisteringly fast laps to pull away. Back at the front Hearty, Parks and kearney were still battling wheel to wheel until Kearney went off in an accident. The final order in race two was:

1. Brian Hearty

2. David Parks

3. Niall O'Flynn

4. Chris McCabe

5. John Linnane All in all a good weekend for the Formula Sheane series with some great battles and good banter.

Well done to all.

Rounds 5/6 of the Avon tyres Formula Sheane championship took place this past weekend with an action packed days racing on Saturday. The day started with heavy rain and poor conditions which didn’t last very long and half way through the Formula Sheane qualifying the track began to dry.

Qualifying

Qualifying was very close and tense with Dave Parks setting the fastest lap for the 1st half of qualifying but it didn’t take long for Kevin Sheane and Brian Hearty to catch up, which led to a nerve-racking session with just 2 tenths separating the top 3 drivers. Pole was taken by Kevin Sheane followed by Brian Hearty and Dave parks then Mark Dunleavey, Richard Kearney, Chris McCabe, Charlie Linnane, Leslie Shaw, Raymond Mckenna and Martin Rafferty.

Race one

By the time the cars were lined up for race one the track was completely dry and the weather was improving rapidly. The 5 second board came up and then the lights came on from the bridge and then they went out , the 10 formula Sheane cars all flew away from the line with Kevin Sheane taking the early lead into turn one followed closely by Dave Parks and Brian Hearty the pack stayed together for a large section of the race but as the race reached its final stages the top 3 drivers pulled away from the pack. After an extremely close battle Brian Hearty managed to pass Dave parks and the final finishing order for race one was.... Kevin Sheane, Brian Hearty, Dave Parks, Mark Dunleavey, Richard Kearney, Chris McCabe, Martin Rafferty, Leslie Shaw, Charlie Linnane and Raymond McKenna.

Race Two

Race two started with sunny perfect conditions, the 10 strong grid of formula Sheanes for the second time flew off the line and powered down toward turn one. Brian Hearty took the early lead with Kevin Sheane behind and David parks in 3rd. Kevin Sheane then managed to get past Brain Hearty and Dave parks was there to swoop in and take second. The order between the front three was now Kevin Sheane in front David Parks in second and Brian Hearty in third. The race progressed and Charlie Linnane made a come back from an off in the back part of the circuit, he managed to climb back up through the grid and battled with Martin Rafferty and Ray McKenna who were showing strong pace all weekend Charlie battled through them and began his hunt for Leslie Shaw.

Back toward the front of the grid it was still nose cone to gearbox for the first three and it looked like it was to stay that way. The cars came into the last corner for the last time and Brian Hearty got back past Dave Parks. Kevin Sheane crossed the line to take the win and make it a double. 2nd and 3rd was still not decided as Dave and Brian were wheel to wheel down the straight until Brian Hearty managed to pull the slightest gap just before the finish line. Leslie shaw crossed the line to take the win in the scholarship championship followed by Charlie Linnane and Martin Raffery the well seasoned midget car driver who made his formula Sheane debut this season in Ireland’s premier racing series. The finishing order for race two was 1: Kevin Sheane, 2: Brian Hearty, 3: David Parks, 4: Mark Dunleavey, 5: Richard Kearney, 6: Chris McCabe, 7:Leslie Shaw, 8: Charlie Linnane, 9: Martin Rafferty, 10: Raymond Mckenna.

Another fantastic weekends racing from the formula Sheane championship well done to all and onward now to the next race.

park 2017

Formula Sheane driver David Parks was voted driver of the year by motorsport.ie after a stunning 2017 season for both him and the Vertical Racing Team!
Dave Parks won the Formula Sheane championship, as well as the Northern Irish Championship and Holmpatrick Trophy.
Dave's teammate Leslie Shaw took Scholarship Championship honours. A great season for both Dave and team! Well done all!

The 2016 campaign kicked off back in April on Mondello Parks National Circuit loop, with the current champion not defending the title this year, the championship is guaranteed a new winner. After the long winter break the drivers were back more eager than ever to take the honours in Ireland’s fastest one make single seater series, where it’s down to driver skill and talent rather than thousands of euro’s and hours spent in the workshop as all the cars are mechanically the same. Brian Hearty was the man on a mission on the opening weekend fending off all the challenges that faced him but it was Robbie Allen’s two sterling drives from the back of the grid in both races that really wowed the spectators at the Kildare Circuit. The Sheane Cars Scholarship Championship kicked off with two great performances from Niall O’Flynn and Andrew Murphy, Murphy took the two wins but again it was O’Flynn’s third place qualifying spot that got everyone talking in the paddock.

As Irelands only internationally racing single seater race series, Rounds 3 & 4 took place at the superb Anglesey Race Circuit in North Wales. The first visit of any Irish single seater series across the Irish Sea for many years saw an air of excitement from the drivers when they arrived at the circuit that wasn’t lost throughout the weekend. The series even brought a celebrity guest drive for the weekend in Today FM’s Anton Savage, and to prove he was not just a gimmick, the Radio man set about claiming Round 3 as his own and took the win. Round 4 went to Kevin Sheane who was over the moon to claim his first win since the 2014 campaign. Niall O’Flynn dominated the Sheane Cars Scholarship Championship with two wins after Championship leader Murphy and John Linnane had a high speed impact removing both from the rest of the weekend. The Series had a very special Trophy race for the late Bob Parks. With a reverse grid format, it really meant that it was anyone’s for the taking. Taking an early lead was Chris McCabe, but it was to be short lived as mechanical issues removed the leader and promoted Charlie Linnane to lead the pack. To say positions changed at every corner of the track was an understatement. Drivers ducked and dived everywhere they could, so much so the commentator could not keep up, Linnane lead the field across the line to take the prestigious trophy for the first time and well-earned when you consider there was less than 1 second separating the top 5 cars and 5 seconds covering first to last.

It was back to Mondello Parks International loop for Rounds 5 & 6, a circuit that always throws up some surprises and action as the longer track is more technical than its national loop sibling. Brian Hearty took pole and looked set to walk away with it but that was by far not what happened. The heavens opened as the cars sat in the assembly area and changed everything. Hearty lead for a lap but Sheane, Parks and Allen had other ideas by dispensing with the four time champion and turning battle for first into a four way war. Parks would overtake Sheane on one corner; Sheane would re-take the position a corner later. The lead changed more than four times in the next few laps as the foursome diced on the drying track, each time finding new grip. Sheane held on to take his second win with Parks and Allen following suit. Round 6 seen Allen on Pole but it was Sheane who put the move on pretty early to take the lead a command a strong gap over the cashing Allen and Parks. Niall O’Flynn took two more wins to take his tally to four in the Sheane Cars Scholarship Championship. David Dempsey and Leslie Shaw had an unfortunate collision in the slippy conditions which resulted in the safety car taking the cars across the line.

The Championship is now wide open with five different race winners and only 3 points separating first and second at the top of the table at the midway point of the season. Next up, the series travels to the ultrafast Kirkistown Race Circuit in Northern Ireland where the cars reach speeds of up 140mph on the straights. It’s going to be hell for leather from here on out, one thing is for sure, the championship never disappoints and it certainly has no intentions of doing so.
